Creative Project

My final video is a collaboration of videos from youtube. Showing the changes of technology over the years, and important events that affected our ancestors, I wouldn't have been able to do this without the process of streaming. All the videos were streamed from youtube. I creatively put them together and uploaded the final product to youtube. The class and the entire internet community can now be streamed my video!

Creative gallery ideas

I feel that a video would be the best option for me for my creative gallery. Because my project is based on shows and movies it would be good to put together a bunch on a youtube video. Maybe I can create an original story by putting together clips from different shows.

"authors" on Youtube

Youtube is a way of expressing ourselves through video. Youtube is a way of showing people cool or funny things, memories, pieces of work, etc. I believe anyone who posts something original to Youtube makes you an author of Youtube. The use of the word "you" in the title makes it known that you can upload anything you want. The site is created for everyone to share and interact. Because most websites are made for only one person to share ideas, Youtube is well liked because it allows everyone to put a piece onto the website. People also upload personal things to Youtube and being able to share that with the internet world is a way of communicating your feelings. Youtube is very relateable because it has grown and become so popular. Youtube allows you to do anything from directions of "how to" to watching episodes of television to seeing someone's home video.

Theory my project most relates to...

My essay topic focuses mostly on the idea of social media. Online television viewing usually allows comments to be posted after each episode which is a way of socially interacting over the internet. Although this is not completely like Facebook, which a lot of people think of when thinking about social media, it is still a way of interacting with peers about a similar interest. With the internet allowing people to stream videos to the internet, more and more people's creative ideas are being broadcast to the nation. Because most people now have access to the internet, the creativity of people's work is becoming more known. This also is allowing people to discover more multimedia authors. Being able to share videos on the internet also lets everyone be a multimedia author.

The further development of the internet, offers free online television viewing, as well as the opportunity for everyone to become some sort of multimedia author, by posting their opinions and videos publicly. Who needs cable, when we've got internet?

Final Annotated Bibliography

Clyds, John. Streaming Movies on the Internet. 13 Oct 2009. Web. 9 Feb 2010.
This article explains in great detail the process of streaming movies on the internet. Many people do not understand how websites can legally have people view full movies on the internet. Streaming is a method that allows people to view the movie without allowing them to download the movie to their computer. This makes it legal.
Streaming is very useful today and is used all over the internet. This technique allows us to watch almost everything for free on the internet that has been aired on TV. Now a days, with the dependence of the internet by so many people, this is a great thing to have. This website explains in a short article on why streaming is made possible.
This is a great source to use for my topic because it explains how we are able to watch TV and movies for free. I wanted to really focus on the legality of it versus the illegal ways people go about watching and downloading shows and movies onto their computers.

Fancast. Watch Full TV Shows and Movies: Free Online Streaming. 2010. Web. 2 Feb 2010.
This is a website that doesn't explain video streaming but actually does it. Fancast is a popular website used by millions to access free TV shows and movies. On Fancast.com, you can look up any movie or TV show and watch it for free without downloading it to your computer.
I chose this website to include for my paper because it one of the most popular video streaming websites used today. The idea for my project came from my use of this site. After learning more about the technique of streaming, I realized that Fancast is a streaming website.
This site is a great example of what my project is based on. Sites like Fancast allow us to watch TV shows absolutely free. Without the process of streaming legally, we wouldn't be able to access these free shows. As I talk about the process of streaming, Fancast safely and quickly lets viewers watch their shows. Fancast also is a way of watching shows without worrying about downloading viruses.

Fuller, John. How Stuff Works: “How Internet TV Works”. 4 Jan 2010. Web. 9 Feb 2010.

This article explains in categories how the internet allows you to watch TV. It explains how you can watch it live, watch old recorded shows, and how internet TV has changed over the years. It explains the technology used in order for this type of system to work.
This article also compares costs of different types of TV entertainment. For example, the article compares Netflix to cable television to online streaming. Obviously, the article promotes online streaming and the process of doing so. After reading this article, people will clearly understand the background in making this process work.
I believe this is a perfect article to use for my project. It gives me in great detail, background information which I need to develop my topic. It teaches me everything I need to know, and how everything is tied together. Without the help of this website, I would not understand much of online streaming. Most of my paper will be referenced from this source.

Hulu. Watch your favorites. Anytime. For free. 2010. Web. 14 Feb 2010.

Hulu is very similar to Fancast considering it is another example of an online streaming website. Like I mentioned before with Fancast, it does not explain how streaming is done, but it shows you how streaming works by offering you free shows and movies.
Without Hulu and the process of video streaming, people would not be able to legally watch TV shows and movies on the internet for free. With the process of downloading movies, people risk downloading viruses and other sources that could permanently damage their computer. Hulu is a great way to stay connected with television and entertainment.
I believe this source is perfect to mention in my project because it offers everything that I will be discussing.

Mcbride, Sarah & Vascellaro, Jessica E., et al. Movie Studios Discuss ways to rent films over Youtube. 3 Sept 2009. Web. 16 Feb 2010

This site that I came across discusses that certain entertainment companies are trying to make an agreement with youtube about renting videos from their site. This will allow the companies to make for money on rentals. Because Blockbuster is not as common as it used to be, offering movies on the web allows viewers to rent movies without leaving their homes.
This idea is very convenient because of the way society is impacted by the internet. Offering online rentals is easy for people to come across. Because youtube is also very popular today, more people will be drawn to the idea.
This article is very useful for my project because I want to touch on other ways companies are making money off online streaming. Online streaming is not just useful for everyday people, but it is also useful for entertainment companies, allowing them to charge some for online video viewing.

Netflix. TV & movies instantly streamed online. 2010. Web. 16 Feb 2010

Netflix is another example of online streaming but it is somewhat different from Hulu and Fancast. Netflix requires you to register in order to watch the videos or shows. Netflix is a company that makes money from their online streaming.
Netflix does offer you a free trial but only for a short period of time. One thing that Netflix offers that Hulu and Fancast do not is the fact that they mail you videos to your house. In order to get another movie sent to you, you must return the other. This is a great system, beneficial for the costumers, and also beneficial for the company.
I would like to add Netflix to my project to compare free online streaming to online streaming that you must pay for. I feel comparing these sites will prove that there are many different ways of online streaming. I would also like to compare the companies of Hulu vs. Netflix and research more into how free online streaming is beneficial for the Hulu itself.

Tatcheva, Eva. TV Meets Web. Consumer Reports. 1 Mar 2010. Web. 2 Mar 2010.

This source, found on the database EbscoHost was an article written recently about the Web and online video streaming. The article discusses Youtube and AOL as they are coming into the video streaming world.
The article focuses on the pros of online streaming. Tatcheva mentions the cost of other forms of TV entertainment and compares it to the great convenience of free television on the internet. The article also recommends new types of technology if you are looking to upgrade. Because the internet is so popular today, internet compatible DVD players and other internet compatible technology is what people should be looking to purchase.
This article is very interesting to use for my project because it allows me to compare the internet 10 years ago to now. The internet is developing more and more each day and with the help of engineers we are developing new forms of entertainment. Although it may not be as comfortable to watch a movie or TV show on your computer, new technology allows you to watch the shows from the internet while connecting it to your TV. This offers you the chance to watch the shows comfortably on the TV as if they are coming from your cable box.

Utsu, Keisuke & Chow, Cheeonn, et al. A Study on Video Performance of Multipoint-to-point video streaming with multiple description coding over and hoc networks. Wiley Periodicals. 2004. Web. 2 Mar 2010.

This article, also found on EbscoHost, is a detailed example of an experiment done in Japan with electrical engineers. They “combine Multiple Description Coding (MDC) with multiple source transport (Multipoint-to-Point transfer: MP2P) in order to maintain smooth video streaming over wireless ad hoc networks”.
The results of the experiment prove that the mechanism does successfully improve video transfer as they were researching for.
I feel an experiment would be great to include in my project because it proves my side of the argument. I want to show that video streaming is helpful, cheaper, and more useful and this experiment proves this point.

Project

My project topic has become more narrowed. I first started out with the interest of music but changed to online televison and movie watching. While researching for my topic, I learned about the process of streaming which is how the internet allows you to watch shows and movies for free without actually downloading them to your computer. I have found many popular websites that that allow this that I will discuss in my project. As of now, I feel I am on the right track.

Multimedia Author

A multimedia author is someone who creates their own piece of work using some sort of technology/computer. The ideas can come with help from other people or simply on your own. It can vary any where form music to video clips to a blog. I consider us all multimedia authors because we are writing on our own on the internet and creating our own pieces of work with the help of the internet and other computer programs. As Lessig states, "Radio, however, soon faced its own competition from a new form of broadcast—television. The cycle then continued." Competition increases more and more each and everyday as the inventions of newer technology are created. What seems to have been an increase of authors (from simple pencil and paper writing to multimedia writing) caues much competition.

More ideas for trailer...

I want to also include websites that work with tv stations, allowing them to show the shows on the internet. Sable commented saying something about hulu.com which i found really interesting. If i could find more sites that are like that i can incorporate how the sites do this. I want to add hit shows that people would know and also include shows from HBO and SHOWTIME that you would usually have ti pay extra a month on cable to watch.

Trailer Ideas

Originally, my idea for my project was music. I was going to discuss how music can be downloaded on the internet free of charge and how companies are loosing money. Because I feel music is such a common topic, I decided to switch to something similar...TV shows on the internet.

I want to get video clips from shows, pictures, and music and make the trailer an all around entertaining project. I want to touch on the ideas that over the last decade TV has changed drastically. You can download entire seasons of shows onto your computer, hook your computer up to a game system, and watch the show on your TV. You can illegally download or purchase shows, but there is always a way to find them free. You can watch them in segments on Youtube or you can just look for a certain scene. You can research the shows, the characters, the story line...you can do everything on the internet.

I want to tie together different shows in my trailer and find links and quotes from the internet I can incooperate into my final project.

Idea for project

I want to incorporate music into my project but I am not completely sure how to relate this to multimedia writing. Maybe discuss how music has changed over the years...how the internet expresses music and how it can tell you everything about the music from looking up the lyrics, listening to clips, watching the music videos, downloading ring tones, etc, etc. I need a little help in narrowing this down.....

Responses to online arcticles

I found it really interesting in "Rise of the Plagiosphere" that the internet has become so developed that it can trace back to anything that has ever been put on it. The fact that teachers now can trace plagerism is very neat to me and I am glad there is finally a way for it to be detected. Plagerism is something that occurs more than some may think, and the use of technology these days should have a way to detect this illegal behavior. Without the use of spiders, this action could not be made possible. Technology, especially the internet, continues to develop and the use of it becomes more important each and every day. In "The Ectasy of Influence" the writer mentions that themes are often reused throughout the years. The reoccuring themes and words used by different authors, directors, and artisits, today is considered plagerism. Even modern television shows esentially plagerize from older stories. Can this be stopped? With the modern internet use and other technological sources we use today, I believe plagerism can be and is starting to become, more seriously looked at. Although, as seen in these articles, plagerism occurs out in the open a lot more than we notice, I believe ideas will become more original, with the fact that plagerism is taken a lot more seriously with the further advancements of our technology.

Catherine Whiteford, my first post

hello world!

Most of my internet time is spent on Facebook (shocker!!). I like to keep in touch with high school friends, family, and it's a good way of hearing about good parties, shows, or other things to do during the week and weekend. I also use it to get in touch with people from my classes. I have a Myspace account but I haven't been on it since I made my Facebook my freshman year of college. I used to IM all of the time in middle school and high school but since Facebook, I feel instant messaging has fallen off the face of the planet. I always am text messaging; it's easy and quick. I also get on the internet to use to the "Stumbleupon" toolbar when I'm bored. I always come across cool sites that way and learn new things every time I'm on it. I don't do much writing on the web besides on my Facebook and that's not much. I'm usually on the internet about an hour out of the day all together. If it's a real slow day I could probably be on the internet for 5 hours...I don't have many computer "skills"; I don't even type right (I only use two fingers) BUT I am willing to learn more about the web and the computer and what it has to offer!!
